its the husk to a buckeye. My old camera could only manage to take extreme macro shots.

huh... I had a buckeye tree in my front yard as I grew up. I remember the husks being spongy with small spikes on the smoothish skin. That looks more like a walnut husk to me.

There are two species of buckeye trees native to Ohio; the yellow buckeye and the Ohio buckeye (also called the American buckeye and the fetid buckeye). The one in the picture is an yellow buckeye. As far as I know, both have smooth spongy husks. ;)
